MSP Software Security Stack

The vast majority of managed service providers have developed an MSP software security stack and are now offering managed security services to their clients, according to the 2021 Datto Global State of the MSP Report. Cyberattacks have been increasing in number and sophistication, and SMBs are struggling to find staff with the necessary expertise in cybersecurity to defend against these attacks. SMBs may have been able to manage basic cybersecurity solutions in-house such as firewalls, antivirus software, and email security solutions, but to protect against current threats and deal with the rapidly changing threat landscape, a much broader range of security software solutions are required. Managing those solutions is proving time-consuming and difficult, which is why so many are turning to their MSPs for help.

Most Popular MSP Cybersecurity Solutions

MSPs are offering clients a broad range of managed security services to meet their needs. The most common areas where MSPs are helping clients – based on the Datto survey – are advanced endpoint security such as next-generation antivirus and endpoint detection and response solutions. Given the massive rise in phishing attacks and the increasingly sophisticated nature of the attacks, it is no surprise that email security solutions with advanced threat detection capabilities have proven popular, such as solutions with sandboxing for detecting zero-day malware. Data loss protection, security framework and auditing, identity access management, anti-malware protection, password management, multifactor authentication, firewalls, remote access, and mobile device management services are also commonly offered as part of the MSP software security stack.

While it can be advantageous to partner with a managed security service provider (MSSP) to provide more specialist security services, as 61% of surveyed MSPs currently do, and managed detection and response providers (44% of MSPs), providing managed security services internally is much more profitable. More than half of MSPs have had to bring in new talent to allow them to provide managed security services, with over one-third training existing staff to provide support for their new security services.

Developing the Best MSP Software Security Stack

For MSPs that are just venturing into managed security services and those that want to reduce their reliance on MSSP partners, finding the right solutions to meet clients’ needs can be a laborious process. Solutions need to be obtained and services developed to protect against the threats that each client faces and developing the perfect MSP software security stack can be a challenge.

Products need to be easy to manage, be well adapted to use by MSPs, be available at the right price point and have reasonable margins for MSPs. MSPs often discover the cybersecurity solutions they have selected do not work seamlessly with each other, with these compatibility issues causing major management headaches. With the wrong solutions, margins are thinned, and it is difficult to profit from providing managed security services.

One of the best approaches is to partner with a small number of vendors that offer multiple security solutions and to use as many of that vendor’s solutions as possible. This will avoid compatibility issues, as all solutions from a single vendor should work seamlessly with each other, and if any problems are experienced you will have a single point of contact for support for all those solutions. You should also seek out vendors who have developed their products from the ground up to meet the needs of MSPs.
