Transcend Networks MSP Adopt Advanced Email Security Solutions for Critical Infrastructure

Transcend Networks MSP Adopt Advanced Email Security Solutions for Critical Infrastructure

Transcend Networks MSP is a managed service provider (MSP) that specializes in supporting clients with high IT demands. Their focus is on delivering critical IT services to customers who prioritize technology in their operations. By implementing SpamTitan and ArcTitan, Transcend Networks has enhanced email security for both their clients and their own business. Maintaining local U.S. email storage was essential for Transcend Networks, especially due to their work with government agencies. Previously, they relied on a cloud-based email security provider, but when the provider began routing emails overseas, this posed a significant problem. Transcend Networks sought a security solution that they could fully customize and manage to meet both their own and their clients’ specific requirements. As one Transcend Networks representative noted, “We’re MSP specialists and need a solution we can configure exactly as needed.” Recognizing the importance of a multi-layered security approach, Transcend Networks also required an email archiving solution to preserve emails that were not backed up by Office 365. This would ensure that, in the event of a security breach, they could provide full email data recovery for their clients.   According to John Penrod, Principal Engineer/VP Transcend Networks “SpamTitan and ArcTitan have been bulletproof in their ability to serve our and our customers needs”.

Key requirements for Transcend Networks included:

  • Local email relaying
  • Seamless migration for existing clients
  • Customizable setup and configuration
  • A high-quality, dependable solution

Transcend Networks implemented two solutions from TitanHQ’s security suite: SpamTitan and ArcTitan. SpamTitan serves as their first line of defense, protecting against phishing attacks, spam, and malware before they reach customers’ inboxes. Transcend Networks chose this solution for several reasons. First, SpamTitan’s private cloud enabled them to keep their clients’ email data onshore, meeting regulatory and client-specific requirements. The solution operates through two AWS instances—primary and secondary—both managed by TitanHQ, which gave Transcend Networks confidence in the system’s security.

SpamTitan’s high level of configurability was a key advantage. Transcend Networks could tailor the solution to their specific needs, such as downloading raw email logs and redirecting flagged spam directly into users’ Outlook junk folders. These technical capabilities set SpamTitan apart from other solutions. As noted by a representative: “The configurability with SpamTitan is far superior to what we’ve seen.” Transcend Networks also deployed ArcTitan for email archiving, both for their clients and their own operations. Its seamless integration with Office 365 simplified the email archiving process and ensured the retention of important data. ArcTitan provided an easy way for both Transcend Networks and their clients to track and access archived emails as needed.

With TitanHQ’s SpamTitan and ArcTitan, Transcend Networks now has a robust, multi-layered email security solution. SpamTitan not only acts as a strong defense against email-based threats but also ensures that their clients’ emails remain onshore, addressing concerns about data being relayed overseas. Meanwhile, ArcTitan’s archiving capabilities helped one client avoid legal issues by enabling access to crucial email data that would have been lost if relying solely on Microsoft 365 backup.

Bitdefender Anti-Virus Engine Incorporated in SpamTitan v7.00

A new version of TitanHQ’s cloud-based anti-spam service and anti-spam software was released on March 5, 2018. SpamTitan version 7.00 includes patches for recently identified vulnerabilities in the ClamAV antivirus engine and a change to the primary AV engine used by the solution.

The primary anti-virus engine of SpamTitan version 7.00 is provided by the Romanian firm Bitdefender. Bitdefender is an award-winning antivirus engine that provides exceptional email protection against malware, viruses, and ransomware. Combined with the secondary AV engine – ClamAV – users benefit from excellent protection against email-based malware and ransomware attacks. The dual AV engines ensure malicious software is not delivered to end users’ inboxes via email attachments.

The change to Bitdefender was a natural choice and TitanHQ is planning to further its strategic relationship with the Romanian cybersecurity firm over the coming weeks and months. The change to the primary AV engine will be unnoticeable to current users, who will continue to be protected from malicious threats.

The update to the latest version will not happen automatically. Customers who have ‘prefetch of system updates’ enabled on their SpamTitan installations will be able to see the latest version in their list of available updates and can manually trigger the update to the new version. Customers who do not have that option enabled need to “check for updates” via their user interface.

Customers have been advised to read the documentation accompanying the latest version prior to installation as it includes important information on how the update should be applied. TitanHQ explains that it is not possible to update from v4 or v5 of the platform to SpamTitan version 7.00 without first installing version 6 of the platform.

Customers should note that the update must be performed before May 1, 2018 to ensure continued protection, as support for the Kaspersky AV engine – used in all versions of SpamTitan prior to v7 – will cease on that date. TitanHQ has also informed customers that support for v4 and v5 of SpamTitan will also stop on May 1, 2018.

SpamTitan v7.00 includes patches for the following vulnerabilities: CVE-2017-12374, CVE-2017-12375, CVE-2017-12376, CVE-2017-12377, CVE-2017-12379, CVE-2017-12380. All of those vulnerabilities exist in ClamAV. The latest version also improves protection against DoS attacks and should be applied as soon as possible. The update will take approximately 10-20 minutes to complete.

SpamTitan Attracts Top Marks on Business Software Review Site

Businesses have to deal with thousands of spam emails each day. Each employee may spend just a few minutes each day dealing with spam emails, but that time could be much better spent on other tasks. Multiply those minutes by the number of employees and it adds up to a significant loss of productivity.

At best, spam email is a nuisance and a drain on productivity. But it is not just nuisance emails that arrive in inboxes. Businesses face a barrage of phishing emails, and malware and ransomware are usually delivered via email.

All it takes is for one employee to be fooled by a malicious email for a network to be compromised, credentials to be revealed, and for files to be encrypted by ransomware. The cost of dealing with those attacks can be considerable.

The solution is to deploy an advanced spam filter that will scan all incoming messages for spam signatures, check email attachments for malware, and assess embedded hyperlinks that would otherwise direct employees to phishing websites and exploit kits. Spam and malicious emails are then quarantined, while genuine emails are delivered without delay.

SpamTitan Attracts Top Marks from Users

To help businesses fend off spam email and ransomware attacks, TitanHQ developed SpamTitan. SpamTitan anti-spam software subjects all incoming emails to a Bayesian analysis. Emails are analyzed for spam signatures and the system ‘learns’ from new spam email campaigns ensuring it remains up to date and copes with new spamming tactics.

Greylisting is used as an additional spam control – Requests are made for suspect messages to be resent. Since spam servers are busy, the delay in messages being resent helps to identify and block more spam messages. These and other controls ensure SpamTitan blocks more than 99.9% of spam email, and ensure a false positive rate of less than 0.03%.

While many spam solutions are difficult to implement and troublesome to maintain, SpamTitan can be configured in minutes and has a low management overhead.

SpamTitan has also been attracting top reviews from users, in particular for ease of implementation and use, high spam capture rates, low false positives and for TitanHQ’s industry-leading customer service.

On the business software review website Capterra, SpamTitan has been awarded 4.5/5 points overall and has received top marks for technical support and customer service.

Some of the positive comments from users of SpamTitan are listed below:

“I like that once you have configured it, you basically forget about it. It just works seamlessly and you don’t worry about it.”

“It has been great stopping emails that bring spam or ransomware. We used to get hundreds of bad emails and now we don’t.”

“The 100% uptime, ease of use, flexibility, customization options, seamless updates, clustering, and support folks who are easy to work with.”

“Wonderful product that I will recommend to every network/systems administrator.”

“It has taken so much workload off of our servers and IT staff. We still run all our security software and best practices but our AV software has barely caught anything with SpamTitan catching all the bad guys. “

Benefits of SpamTitan

SpamTitan is costs as little as $17 a month for 10 users and the solution requires no software downloads or hardware purchases. Setup takes just a few minutes and once it is up and running, there is next to no maintenance.

If you already have a spam solution in place and it is labor-intensive and complicated to use, you want to cut costs, or your solution has too many false positives and lets too much spam email through its filters, it is time to make a change.

If you have yet to implement a spam filter, claim back all the lost hours of productivity and improve your organization’s security with SpamTitan.

4ipnet customers are now protected from a wide range of online threats, and can carefully control the Internet sites and web pages that can be accessed via their Wi-Fi networks. 4ipnet customers will also be able to market their Wi-Fi hotspots under the banner of Friendly Wi-Fi, ensuring customers are prevented from viewing inappropriate and illegal website content.

Gold Star SpamTitan Review in Recent Spam Filter Tests

New SpamTitan Review

Spam Filter Reviews, a website providing reviews of spam filtering solutions, has awarded TitanHQ’s SpamTitan with a glowing 4.9 gold star rating. The new SpamTitan review saw the product attract marks of 4.9/5 for both functionality and real-time emulation.

Each spam filtering product reviewed on the site is assessed on 18 different elements, with SpamTitan scoring highly on 16/18 of those elements.

The reviewers were particularly impressed with the ability to easily adjust scam scoring on all incoming emails, which allowed the spam filtering level to be fine-tuned to make spam filtering more aggressive or more lenient.

Another major plus was the ease at which quarantined messages can be checked. With any spam filtering solution, there will be false positives from time to time. Virus Bulletin reviews have shown SpamTitan’s false positive rate is particularly low – less than 0.03%. However, when legitimate messages do trigger the spam filter, checking those messages is straightforward.

In its review of SpamTitan, Spam Filter Reviews explained the ease at which quarantined messages can be safely viewed from the admin console. Users can view simple metrics such as the message date, recipient, envelope address, and message size, but also more detailed information using one of four different tabs.

SpamTitan lets users view the full HTML message, as well as the entire SMTP protocol header. If the email is genuine, users can quickly and easily release the message for delivery and whitelist the sender’s email address to ensure future messages are always delivered.

As Spam Filter Reviews points out, the ability to view the full body of a captured message is absent from many spam filtering solutions. This feature can save admin staff valuable time.

SpamTitan also rated particularly well on reporting. SpamTitan allows users to configure an extensive range of reports, providing users with all the information they need to measure inbound mail flow metrics. Spam Filter Reviews explained that many leading spam filtering solutions do not have such extensive spam reporting functionality. The ability to configure quarantine reports to show all messages since sign up or those captured since the last scheduled report was also praised, and found to be absent in many other spam filtering solutions.

Accessing the SpamTitan console was also found to be easy, regardless of the device being used. Since the control panel is full HTML, it can be easily accessed on mobile devices, while the admin console was found to be intuitive and easy to use.

Set up was also a quick and easy process, taking just 13 minutes. “13 minutes is extremely good considering the we had a previously MX record TTL of 5 minutes, so there is a reasonable likelihood that, if the domains TTL had previously been set to a lower TTL, the set up would have been even quicker.”

The only down point was the lack of link re-writing functionality, although due to the high degree of accuracy of the spam filter, this negative was somewhat mitigated.

Spam Filter Reviews’ SpamTitan review summarized the product saying, “All in all, SpamTitan is a very stable, clean platform with many additional features which makes an admin’s life a lot easier to manage user expectations,” also explaining “It is our comparative opinion that SpamTitan’s system is extremely under-rated as it’s clean, accurate and functionality full features certainly exceed and surpass some of the most well know Products on the market today.”

Strong Growth Continues at TitanHQ with Large Influx of New Customers

It has been a busy summer for TitanHQ. The company has been working hard to improve its award-winning cybersecurity solutions to offer even greater protection from the ever-increasing range of email and web-based threats.

TitanHQ has also been expanding its customer base and now protects an increasingly diverse range of companies from email and web-based cyberattacks. The summer has seen a swathe of new enterprise clients sign up and start using TitanHQ’s suite of cybersecurity products.

Many new enterprise customers have joined the TitanHQ community over the past few months, from SMBs to large organizations with thousands of employees. While each company has a different infrastructure and requirements, all share a common goal: A need to protect their employees, networks and data from cyberattacks.

TitanHQ would like to take this opportunity to welcome its new customers from the healthcare, hospitality, education, financial services and information technology sectors, a selection of which are detailed below:

European Hospitals Group

Cyberattacks on the healthcare industry have increased considerably over the past two years, with many large healthcare organizations falling victim to malware and ransomware attacks. Many of those attacks occurred as a result of employees visiting or being redirected to websites where malware is silently downloaded. Preventing employees from accessing malicious websites is an essential, yet often overlooked, aspect of cybersecurity.

The European Hospitals Group recognized the risk of malware downloads and decided to take action. The hospital group employs 1,800 people across two locations in the city of Brussels in Belgium: St. Elisabeth in Uccle and St. Michel in Etterbeek/European Quarter. The multilingual hospital offers excellent care for patients and now has excellent protection against web-based threats with WebTitan. WebTitan is used to carefully control the websites that can be accessed by staff, blocking web-based threats and preventing inappropriate website content from being accessed via its network.

US Beef Corporation

The hospitality sector has been extensively targeted by cybercriminals over the past year. Those malicious actors have attempted to gain access to sensitive customer data, commonly doing so via malware infections on POS systems.

US Beef Corporation is best known for its highly popular chain of restaurants: Arby’s. The first Arby’s restaurant was opened by US Beef Corporation in 1969. By 1995, the popularity of the restaurant chain saw it ranked as the 20th largest franchise in the United States. New restaurants continue to be opened and now the company has broken into the top ten franchises in the United States with 350 establishments, employing 7,500 members of staff.

US Beef Corporation recognised the need to protect its network from email- based attacks and prevent staff from falling for phishing attacks. US Beef Corporation chose SpamTitan Cloud as its anti-spam solution.

TitanHQ is now protecting the inboxes of all those employees from phishing and social engineering attacks and helps to keep the company’s network free from malware and ransomware.

Burlington Edison School District

There is growing pressure on schools and higher education establishments to implement technological solutions to restrict the websites that can be accessed via their wired and wireless networks. Children need to be protected online and prevented from accessing potentially harmful website content such as pornography and images of child abuse. Web filtering is also an important element of CIPA compliance.

The Burlington-Edison School District recognises the important of technological controls over acceptable Internet usage policies, and has chosen TitanHQ’s WebTitan to prevent inappropriate content from being accessed by its 230 staff and 3,900 students across 6 schools in Skagit County, Washington.

Miway Insurance

The insurance industry stores vast quantities of sensitive data on customers – a treasure trove of information for cybercriminals. Keeping that data secure and networks protected requires a range of cybersecurity controls.

Johannesburg, South Africa based Miway Insurance is a direct short-term insurance and financial services company offering a wide range of home and business insurance products. The company employs 3,000 staff members, the majority of whom require access to the Internet at work.

To protect against web-based attacks and prevent malware and ransomware downloads, Miway insurance chose WebTitan.  WebTitan is used to block access to malicious websites where drive-by malware downloads occur and to restrict access to unacceptable website content.

TNS Group

Stamford, CT-based TNS Group is a leading provider of managed IT support services in the Tri-State area and has clients throughout the United States and beyond. The firm was looking for a solution provider that could provide a spam filtering solution that could be easily offered to its customers to protect them from email-based threats.

Through SpamTitan Cloud, TNS Group can offer its clients an advanced spam filtering service to protect against phishing and social engineering attacks, malware and ransomware and keep inboxes spam free.

All the above companies have now had their TitanHQ products deployed and are protected from email and web-based attacks. If you are looking to improve your organization’s security posture and want to ensure your networks are kept malware free, contact the TitanHQ team today to find out more about the WebTitan web filtering and SpamTitan anti-spam solutions.

New Data Sheet for ArcTitan Cloud

TitanHQ has published a new data sheet for ArcTitan Cloud, detailing the features and benefits of this cost-effective, convenient, and secure email archiving solution for businesses.

Email Storage is a Nightmare for Most Businesses

Email has changed the way companies do business. Just a decade ago, businesses relied on letters and faxes, yet today, email is now serving those needs. Email accounts are now used to receive and send orders, store critical business data, and communicate with staff, clients, and customers.

Email accounts now contain a vast amount of data and access to that information needs to be maintained at all times.  Given the volume of emails that are sent and received each day by each employee, storage is a major issue. Most medium to large businesses have to purchase a considerable amount of hardware just to store their emails. Storage requirements can also rapidly change, so additional capacity is always required to meet changing storage needs.

While sufficient storage can be purchased, it is not long before space is used, mailbox quotas are reached, servers start to become sluggish, and backups start to take an age to complete.

Good email practices can help, but employees are increasingly using email for document storage and are placing even greater pressures on email storage solutions.

While storage demands can be eased by deleting old and unwanted emails, businesses that are required to comply with the Sarbanes Oxley Act or other email archiving legislation may not have this option. Emails therefore need to be archived so they can be accessed at any time.

A lost email could be a major headache for a business, but if there is a legal dispute or an audit, a lost email could be catastrophic. Lost emails could result in significant fines for non-compliance and even imprisonment. With email archiving legislation often calling for emails to be stored for a minimum of seven years, many companies have frequent organizational storage nightmares.

Businesses can solve their storage needs with additional hardware and internal storage solutions, but recovering emails can prove problematic. If emails are not stored or archived correctly, searches can take an extraordinary amount of time. PST files can be a nightmare, especially if searches need to be performed or emails need to be regularly retrieved from archives. However, storing emails in SQL databases brings its own headaches. Costs can be excessive, databases often perform poorly, backups become exceedingly complex, and there is significant potential for data loss.

Fortunately, companies can solve their email storage needs by using a secure, cloud-based email archiving system: One that allows an unlimited number of emails to be securely stored, while also ensuring searches can be quickly performed and emails quickly and easily retrieved at any time.

Key Benefits of ArcTitan

ArcTitan Cloud from TitanHQ is a powerful, cloud-based email archiving solution that has been designed to meet the needs of businesses of all sizes, especially companies in heavily regulated industries where audits are to be expected.

While ArcTitan Cloud is designed for long term storage to ensure that no email is ever lost, emails can be quickly and easily retrieved at any time. With ArcTitan Cloud, organizations can do not have to cope with organizational storage headaches or setting up complex storage and backup systems.

ArcTitan Cloud requires very little on-site hardware, there are no complex installations (setup takes about 5 minutes), and employees are essentially provided with bottomless email accounts. The versatile storage solution is designed to grow with businesses, with no limits on storage space or the number of users.

To explain the features and benefits of ArcTitan Cloud, TitanHQ has produced a new data sheet for ArcTitan Cloud, covering the most important elements of the solution for quick and easy reference. If you are struggling with storage space, are unhappy with your current email storage or archiving solution, or are looking to cut the cost of email storage, ArcTitan Cloud could well be the solution you are looking for.

Presentation on Using DNS Filtering for Web Content Filtering

Over the past few years, hackers and cybercriminals have been increasing their efforts to infect computers, gain access to data, and extort money from businesses.

New malware is now being released at an alarming rate. A new malware variant is now being released every four seconds. Ransomware is also a major threat. The file-encrypting software is used to lock files on the victim’s computer and requires a ransom payment to be made in order to regain access to files. New ransomware variants are similarly being developed at unprecedented rates.

One ransomware author generated $96 million in profit in the first six months of 2016 from ransom payments. At a typical cost of around $500 per encrypted machine, it clearly shows the sheer number of infections. Of course, that is just one ransomware author. There are many authors, and now more than 200 active ransomware families.

Malware and ransomware is spread via spam email campaigns, malvertising, and via malicious websites. TitanHQ detects up to 60,000 malicious websites every day. Preventing end users from accessing these sites stops malicious software from being installed on end users’ machines. The risk of a malware or ransomware infection is considerable, as WebTitan CTO Neil Farrell explains, “We block millions of websites per month and estimate that the average user encounters 3 malicious links per day.”

TitanHQ constantly updates its list of malicious websites to ensure that end users are protected from new threats. End users can also block certain categories of website that are much more likely to be used by cybercriminals to infect users. This helps to keep business networks free from malware and ransomware, while also protecting WiFi users from online threats such as malware and phishing, as well as preventing inappropriate or illegal content from being accessed.

At the recent 2016 WiFi Now conference in London – The world’s premier event for professionals involved in the WiFi industry – TitanHQ’s Sales Director, Conor Madden gave a presentation on DNS WiFi filtering. Conor explained the benefits that can be gained from restricting accessible website content and why DNS filtering is the future of web content filtering.

If you were unable to attend the WiFi Now event or missed Conor’s DNS filtering presentation and you would like to find out more about TitanHQ’s innovative DNS-based web filter, you can view the DNS filtering presentation below:

Microsoft to End Support for SmartScreen Spam Email Filters from November

Microsoft will stop providing updates for its SmartScreen spam email filters due to the failure of the filters to cope with modern email spam campaigns.

SmartScreen spam email filters have long be used with Outlook and Exchange but, from November 1st, they will be “deprecated” by Microsoft – meaning that the filters will no longer be provided or updated. In a statement released by Microsoft last week, the company said:

“As spammers have evolved and increased the volume and sophistication of their attacks, this type of spam prevention is no longer a useful way to prevent spam”. The company also acknowledged that there had been conflicts between SmartScreen and Microsoft´s own Exchange Online protection (EOP).

Microsoft first released its SmartScreen spam email filters in 2003. They direct email considered to be spam into Outlook’s junk folder. However, the filters are considered too slow to address modern spam campaigns, which launch in minutes and often hide their origins using “reputation high jacking”. This is despite many security flaws in Microsoft products.

Microsoft went to great lengths to avoid any confusion between the SmartScreen spam email filters and the SmartScreen site reputation protections that are part of the Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer browsers. Despite the similar “SmartScreen” name, they have different functions.

Microsoft´s statement said: “In Windows, Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer browsers, the SmartScreen Filter online protection feature helps consumers to stay protected from malicious websites and downloads.”

The deprecation of Microsoft´s SmartScreen spam email filter will mostly affect organizations using Exchange Server on premises. Microsoft suggests that organizations currently using SmartScreen can use Exchange Online Protection or a third-party solution as alternatives.

The company is recommending that organizations running Exchange Server on premises put together a plan to have replacement spam protection in place before November 1st. From that date, the SmartScreen spam email filters will remain operative but less and less effective at detecting spam email as time goes on.

Organizations looking to decrease the volume of spam they receive are advised to review our anti-spam tips. For organizations seeking an alternative solution to Microsoft´s SmartScreen spam email filters, you are invited to try SpamTitan free for fourteen days. Please contact your local area support team for more information about this offer.

All McDonalds Restaurants in the Philippines Protected by SpamTitan

McDonalds (Philippines) is the latest fast food chain to choose TitanHQ as its partner to protect employees from phishing attacks.

McDonalds operates more than 500 restaurants in the Philippines and all of those restaurants will now be protected with TitanHQ’s anti-spam solution, SpamTitan. Under the terms of the agreement, TitanHQ has been tasked with keeping employee inboxes free from email spam and protecting its network from other email-borne threats such as malware and ransomware.

Email spam has declined in recent years following the take down of large botnets by international task forces, yet the threat from phishing has never been greater. The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) has recently released a report that shows phishing attacks in 2016 have spiked. In the first quarter of the year, APWG reported there were more phishing attacks “than at any other time in history”.

Phishing attacks have also become far more sophisticated, making it harder for employees to identify phishing emails. Unfortunately, all it takes is for one employee to fall for a single phishing email for a network to be compromised. Employing a robust and powerful anti-spam solution has never been more important.

SpamTitan was chosen to protect all McDonalds restaurants in the Philippines for the excellent level of protection offered, but also due to the simplicity of the solution. As McDonalds (Philippines) IT manager Ramon Rivera III explains, “SpamTitan’s best feature is that it simply works as promised with immediate results.  The product is incredibly powerful and yet simple to manage.”

The increase in phishing attacks and the rise in the use of ransomware has prompted many fast food chains to re-evaluate their cybersecurity defenses; however, it is not only employees that need to be protected.

McDonalds has recently announced that it will also be taking action to reduce the risk to customers who connect to its in-restaurant Wi-Fi networks. In order to protect minors, McDonalds will be implementing a web filtering solution to prevent users of its restaurant Wi-Fi networks from accessing pornography. All McDonalds restaurants are to be protected by a web filtering solution which will prevent inappropriate web content from being accessed by any of its customers.

McDonalds is setting an example which other fast food chains are following. After the decision to start offering family-friendly Wi-Fi was announced by McDonalds, Starbucks followed suit. The coffee shop chain is currently looking for a web filtering solution to ensure its coffee shop Wi-Fi networks are 100% family friendly.

TitanHQs Eric Simpson to Attend HostingCon Global 2016 Conference

The HostingCon Global 2016 Conference is the global event for the cloud and service provider ecosystem, and is the only conference in North America geared exclusively for the hosting and cloud community.

TitanHQ MSP Program Manager, Eric SimpsonThe conference offers the opportunity to find out more about the latest industry news, innovations, and technology serving the hosting and cloud community. The HostingCon Global 2016 Conference is a must-visit event for hosting and cloud providers, MSPs, ISVs, VARs, and value-added service providers.

We are delighted to announce that TitanHQ’s MSP Program Manager, Eric Simpson, will be attending this year’s conference on July 24, 2016 and will be meeting with MSPs and potential partners interested in adding TitanHQ’s WebTitan web filtering solution to their service offerings.

TitanHQ developed WebTitan to be an easy to implement and cost-effective web filtering solution for small to medium sized enterprises. The 100% cloud-based solution is ideal for MSPs who want to start offering a web filtering service to their clients.

WebTitan offers a number of advantages for MSPs, including a recurring revenue model, short sales cycle, generous margins, and minimal IT service and management overhead.

Web Filtering in the News

Small, medium and large businesses in the United States are being urged to employ a web content filtering solution for Wi-Fi networks to ensure that minors are not exposed to potentially harmful website content such as pornography.

Internet safety organizations and child protection organizations have been petitioning some of the nation’s largest retail outlets, restaurants, and coffee shop chains requesting the use of web filtering solutions for Wi-Fi networks.

Free Wi-Fi networks are increasingly being used to download pornographic material, while illegal website content such as child pornography is being uploaded and shared due to the added degree of anonymity that free public Wi-Fi offers. Consumers are now actively seeking out family friendly Wi-Fi access points and are avoiding businesses that fail to block inappropriate website content.

In the past week, after being petitioned by Enough is Enough – one of the most active internet safety organizations in the United States – and the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, Starbucks announced that the decision has been taken to start using a web content filtering solution to prevent the accessing of pornography in its coffee shops. McDonalds also announced this week that a web filtering solution has now been implemented to block pornography in its U.S. restaurants.

With Web filtering in the news and increasing pressure being placed on organizations to offer clean, family-friendly Wi-Fi access to customers, an increasing number of organizations are now looking for web filtering solutions to block pornography and prevent other types of undesirable website content from being accessed via their Wi-Fi networks.

Friendly Wi-Fi Now Offered by Mocha Beans, Courtesy of TitanHQ

Mocha Beans, the Galway-based coffee shop chain, has recently implemented TitanHQs WebTitan Cloud for Wi-Fi and has become the first chain of coffee shops in the Republic of Ireland to be accredited under the Friendly Wi-Fi Scheme.

The Friendly Wi-Fi Scheme was created in the UK in 2014 in collaboration with the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) and the Registered Digital Institute. The Friendly Wi-Fi Scheme is the world’s first public Wi-Fi accreditation scheme, and was developed to ensure that public Wi-Fi networks can be used by children and young people without them being placed at risk of accessing inappropriate website content such as pornography, child abuse imagery, videos, and websites.

The Friendly Wi-Fi Scheme was developed after concern was raised by children’s charities that minors could be easily subjected to inappropriate website content while accessing public Wi-Fi networks.

Any establishment displaying the Friendly Wi-Fi symbol has had its Wi-Fi network checked and verified by an independent body to ensure that content filters have been applied that block inappropriate material.

Mocha Beans recently chose TitanHQ to provide its customers with clean and safe internet access. According to Cathal Keogh, MD of Mocha Beans, “Providing guest Wi-Fi in a coffee shop or restaurant is now expected. It was important for us to ensure we did everything possible to protect guests while using our free Wi-Fi service.”

SpamTitan Technologies, now TitanHQ, Listed as one of the World’s Most Innovative Cybersecurity Companies for Second Consecutive Quarter

Cybersecurity Ventures has announced the Q2 2015 edition of the Cybersecurity 500 list. The list is a global compilation of cybersecurity solutions and service firms worth watching. So far, only four companies on the list come from Ireland; email and web security vendor SpamTitan Technologies headquartered in Galway, Netfort, VigiTrust  and PixAlert. Success for MSPs : Interview with SpamTitan Technologies anti spam expert Steven Kenny.

What can SpamTitan anti spam do for Managed Service Providers? Interview with anti spam, email security, anti malware Steven Kenny, Head of Support Services,  SpamTitan Technologies.

Can you start by telling us about SpamTitan?

Steven : SpamTitan began producing email security solutions over 15 years ago, and now provides powerful email  and web security solutions to businesses worldwide. Security and networks have grown more complicated in the past 15 years, but SpamTitan has remained focused on delivering easy-to-use solutions that are comprehensive but not complex.Who do the experts turn to when they need a security solution? Seventy-three percent of SpamTitan’s customers are Managed Service Providers or system integrators. SpamTitans’ security solutions are used by network administrators and IT managers in 124 countries.

What Does the Email Threat Landscape Look Like Today for MSPs?
Steven : Email threats are increasing and getting more sophisticated, putting MSPs’ customers, their finances, and their identities at risk. MSPs may find their very survival as businesses under threat. Their antagonists, originally the hackers down the street, are now highly professional international crime gangs that are often based in Russia or China where law enforcement can’t get to them. Their attacks are getting increasingly sophisticated, with damage that might be evident immediately but sometimes isn’t apparent for years.

The most devastating attacks often start with a seemingly innocuous email. The recent  Carbanak financial attack where a hacker group stole as much as $1 billion from banks and other financial companies worldwide since 2013 started with a simple phishing email. The target breach from last year was a massive assault that exposed the credit card and personal data of more than 110 million customers, appears to have started with a malware-laced email sent to employees at a firm that did business with Target. Anyone operating a data center—or anyone just connecting to the Internet–needs to make fighting spam and malware a top priority. Everyone who goes online must have the tools to fight phishing and social engineering.

Let’s talk about email. How do you convey the importance of email protection in today’s culture?
Steven : Email is still an important business tool. It’s also the favourite method of entry for attackers. No news there.  As a gateway to sensitive customer information, crucial databases, and other valuable data, email remains one of the most effective threat vectors around.

Email is older than the web, which may mean that it’s lost some of its lustre. Many see social media platforms as more exciting, and the fact that email is non-proprietary means no one is pushing its agenda. But email is actually growing in influence; as the number of internet users grow, so does email usage. Every social media account requires an email address, and most people have more than one.

Email security solutions need to continue to evolve to keep up with the increasingly sophisticated attacks that threaten all of us. At SpamTitan, we do our best to educate the IT community and potential customers on the consequences of doing nothing. Putting the right protection in place is key. Prevention is cheaper and easier than dealing with the damage and financial loss resulting from a successful hacking attack.

What should MSPs be doing today to protect themselves from email threats?
Steven: MSPs often provide email security as a service. One customer getting hacked can result in the IP address for many customers getting hacked – a single bot on the network can bring down the service for multiple customers. Preventing IP blacklisting in the first place is critical; MSPs need to ensure the anti-spam solution they deploy has features such as IP rotation, bandwidth throttling, and rate controls, allowing limits to be set for emails sent per unit time, size, domain and per mailbox. If a potential blacklisting event is detected, the solution also needs to alert the network administrators so action can be taken. MSP IP addresses can be very well protected by using specific features within SpamTitan like Rate Controls and IP Delivery Pool features.

MSPs see their margins squeezed by commoditisation of services by technology giants. They need more cost effective infrastructure and technology at the same time as they’re being pressured to continuously improve customer service. MSP margins, which directly affect profits, are being squeezed by the economy, competition, and the need to keep up with technology. MSPs customer vary and some like more control of the service provided than others. With SpamTitan MSPs can delegate administration of domain groups and/or domains to their customers, this provides some control to the customer and also frees up the MSPs time to deal with other issues.

Attackers still rely on email as a method for deploying malware, whether via advanced phishing attacks, drive by downloads – the list of threat delivery methods is increasing all the time. There is no single cure for these persistent and increasing threats. Powerful email security (inbound and outbound filtering) provides a barrier for attackers to overcome. SpamTitan includes the latest version of the Kaspersky anti-virus software  which offers zero-day threat detection via Cloud based signatures. MSPs need to deliver consistent protection. A  heavily layered security solution like SpamTitan successfully delivers this integrated approach.

What kind of MSPs use SpamTitan?
Steven : MSPs looking to offer their customers world-class email security without the requirement of sophisticated infrastructure, expensive expertise, or massive time investment for what should ideally be an invisible service. Because spam filtering is considered to be an integral part of an email service MSPs, customers aren’t willing to pay extra for it.

The MSP customers who use SpamTitan are knowledgeable and know what they want in a solution. Many are moving from cumbersome and overly complex products. They know what they need to find in an alternative that really works for them.

What’s the most common feedback you get from MSP customers?
Steven : How easy SpamTitan is to set up and the fact that once deployed there are no reports of customers being hit by spam or email viruses. It’s not surprising that our solution is so successful; it uses multiple layers of testing and filtering and comes with double anti-virus protection.

Our MSP appreciate the fact that SpamTitan is easy to use, easy to manage, and extremely affordable compared to other solutions they’ve tested. A major reason why MSPs invite SpamTitan into their product portfolio is the attractive pricing. With MSP margins shrinking MSPs are very careful about planning their technology to give them the edge in the market and to provide reasonable returns, and they find they can depend on SpamTitan to deliver.

Cybersecurity 500 lists SpamTitan Technologies as a company to watch in 2015.

Irish security firms were noticeably lacking from the latest Cybersecurity 500, a recently setcyber security, network security up global listing of the “hottest” firms in the cybersecurity sector. So far, only two companies come from Ireland; email and web security vendor SpamTitan Technologies headquartered in Galway and VigiTrust in Dublin.

Launched last October by a Californian Research company. The firm behind the Cybersecurity 500 explains that the intention was to create a list of firms worth watching rather than simply reflecting size and revenue. The list is based on the recommendations of a range of experts including CISOs, VCs, security professionals encountered at global security events and during research. The company explain that none of the companies listed paid anything simply to be included.

Retail Cyber Attacks Dominate 2014

Data breaches and cyberattacks are scary and not just for consumers but also for IT professionals and small business owners. It’s hard to really grasp the level of fear that these attacks generate. Successful cyberattacks cost businesses a lot of money by scaring away investors and customers not  to  mention the expensive damage that can be done to an organizations computer network. The average cost of cyber crime attacks per organisation in the United States is estimated at 12.69 million U.S. dollars. Second-ranked is Germany averaging 8.13 million U.S. dollars in damages per company attack.

Here’s a discouragingly long list of some of the biggest retail cyber attacks of the past year.

Sony. One of the most recent hacks, the Sony break-in compromised 47,000 social security numbers, sometimes with accompanying names, birth dates, and addresses.

Neiman Marcus. One of the first announced hacks of the year, the Neiman Marcus attack actually took place in 2013. The data breach set off alerts in the company’s security system 60,000 times. The data of 350,000 customers was compromised.

Sally Beauty. Slightly better than the Neiman Marcus breach. Only—only!—280,000 unlucky customers had their data compromised.

White Lodging. White Lodging is a hotel management company that manages franchises for hotels such as the Hilton, Marriott, and Sheraton. In February it was announced that there had been a data breach in the restaurants and gift shops in 14 of the managed hotels.

Michaels. The craft supply store announced in January that the credit card information of 2.6 million customers had possibly been exposed in a breach that lasted eight months. Not only that: in its subsidiary Aaron Brothers stores, another 400,000 cards may have been compromised.

Affinity Gaming. The company, which manages casinos, announced that they found evidence in May that their credit card system had been hacked.

Bebe Stores. The women’s clothing chain confirmed in December that there had been a data breach in November in their 175 retail stores.

Staples. Staples announced in December that it had suffered a data breach occurring over a period of six months that compromised 1.16 million credit and debit cards. The data breach was discovered because the stolen card information was being used for fraudulent purchases.

Albertsons. Cyber thieves hacked into a series of stores under the Albertsons’ umbrella, including SuperValu, Acme, Shaw’s Supermarket, Hornbacher’s, Star Market, Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Shop ‘N Save, and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy.

PF Changs. In June, the restaurant chain announced that a security breach had occurred that affected the information of its customers at 33 restaurants.

UPS. UPS announced in August that credit card information might have been compromised at 51 UPS stores.

Dairy Queen. The Dairy Queen breach may have affected 600,000 unfortunate ice cream lovers.

Goodwill. The Goodwill breach compromised 868,000 debit and credit cards.

Home Depot. This was one of the hugest breaches of the year, with a mind-boggling 56 million debit and credit cards affected.

Sourcebooks. Sourcebooks is an online bookseller. Its online system was hacked last spring, with data from just over 5,000 customers being stolen.

Kmart. Kmart revealed in October that a data breach had taken place in its system.

Staples. The Staples breach may have compromised the credit and debit card information of 1.16 million customers.

Domino’s Pizza. The pizza chain had the information of 650,000 customers in Belgium and France stolen and held for ransom by the hacking group Rex Mundi.

EBay. Hackers absconded with name, address, phone number, and birth date information on 145 million accounts.

Jimmy John’s. The sandwich chain announced in September that credit and debit card information had been compromised at 216 outlets.

Spec’s. This Texas wine chain suffered a 17-month breach that compromised the information of perhaps 550,000 customers.

Whew, pretty bad, so perhaps it’s not surprising the Secret Service estimated that 1,000 American merchants were affected by attacks like this during the summer of 2014 and that many of them didn’t even know it. It’s war out there, and according to the Ponemon Institute, only one-third of computer security experts say they do continuous database monitoring. Twenty-two percent say they don’t monitor at all, which makes winning the war a challenge.

Although many organizations are still lacking confidence in their ability to prevent a cyber attack or data breach there are many highly-developed and proven security tools available that provide a vital layer of protection from security threats to help IT Pros secure their organizations.

SpamTitan Technologies Unveils ArcTitan, a powerful email archiving solutions for SMBs

Galway, IE, Sept 29th 2014 – SpamTitan Technologies, a leading producer of business email and web security solutions, today announced the availability of ArcTitan, a powerful cloud based email archiving solution targeted at helping small and medium sized enterprises.  The solution integrates seamlessly with most existing corporate email mail servers in use today including including  MS Exchange 07/13,Lotus Domino, Kerio, MDeamon, Zimbra, Google Apps, Office 365.

In today’s corporate world, email remains the most critical business application. ArcTitan provides a simple yet powerful solution to offload email storage, streamline search and compliance needs, and give users permissions-based access to any email message. ArcTitan is simple to access and requires little administrative effort. These comprehensive features ensure ease of use and take the burden off of system administrators. With ArcTitan businesses have peace of mind that they have a secure copy of every email, even if deleted from servers”, said Ronan Kavanagh, CEO, SpamTitan Technologies.

With non-compliance regulations bringing fines and threats of imprisonment, businesses are looking to deploy systems that archive email communications in a compliant way. For many organisations, this can become an organisational and storage nightmare. ArcTitan helps organizations in highly regulated industries ensure compliance in the case of an audit. “Most archiving legislation now calls for a 7 year retention period, these regulations and penalties mean organisations are often under pressure to find a solution that allows them to comply but in the easiest and most affordable way”.

Outside of regulated industries, ArcTitan can help organizations comply with acts of legislation such as the Federal Rules for Civil Disclosure and the EU´s General Data Protection Regulation. Under the EU´s General Data Protection Regulation, organizations that collect, process or retain the personal data of EU citizens will be subject to privacy and security laws similar to those in regulated industries. Furthermore, with ArcTitan´s fast search and retrieval engine, data access requests allowed by the Regulation can be conducted quickly and more efficiently than with other data storage methods.

ArcTitan has been designed with both the flexibility and control organizations need to meet changing business requirements. The ArcTitan solution delivers the following benefits:

  • Peace of mind –robust and redundant hosting as the Infrastructure is built on Amazons Virtual Private Cloud on AWS. We also do backups of our whole infrastructure.
  • Complete Security
    1. Mail is fully encrypted, you can use TLS Encryption to send us your email, and when it is stored, it is stored encrypted using AES 128 encryption.
    2. We use passwords that are hashed and encrypted to control access with inbuilt certificate management and delegated management.
  • Disaster Recovery – should it arise that any event destroys your on premises mail server with ArcTitan you have an off-site back up with a global enterprise level infrastructure
  • Reduce IT Budget – ArcTitan removes the cost of provisioning, management and upgrading hardware. With ArcTitan all of these costs are removed.

Highlighted features of ArcTitan include:

“Using the near limitless capacity of the cloud for email archiving and search makes perfect sense and with ArcTitan it just couldn’t be simpler, more secure or cost effective” said  Kavanagh. ArcTitan provides an extra layer of protection to the organisation. With ArcTitan Users can search, view and retrieve their email even from their own Outlook client. The solution also includes full email search functionality and legislative compatibilities for e-discovery, retention and audit compliance. SpamTitan Technologies will be releasing a new feature rich SpamTitan v6.01 in April.

Tampa, FL and Galway, Ireland – 10th March  2014.  SpamTitan Technologies  will release v6.01 in April, a feature rich release of the award winning spam filter  that offers considerable enhancements in usability, security and network management. With centralized management  and control, and flexible on-premises or cloud deployment options, SpamTitan continues to deliver incredibly  cost-effective and manageable capabilities.  SpamTitan 6.1 due to be release early April will offer businesses enhanced and even more powerful email security with additional outbound mail relaying features, improved Application controls, and multiple UI enhancements.

We're really excited here at SpamTitan Technologies," said Sean Doherty Senior Product Developer . "We've put a lot of time and effort into the creation and launch of SpamTitan 6.1 it will be so rewarding to see all that hard work come to fruition in delivering these new features to our customers."

As part of the release of SpamTitan 6.1 in April users will see the introduction of   advanced policy based rate controls which will allow the rejection or deferral of messages based on a number of criteria further protecting the system from spammers or spam-programs (also known as "spam-bots") that send large amounts of email to the server in a small amount of time.

SpamTitan 6.1 also sees the addition of support for sender based smarthosts. Sender dependent smarthosts provide the ability to relay mail outbound from a particular domain or email address through a specific relay or smarthost. This is used to ease the management of a single mail server with aliases, security, and Internet access rather than maintaining numerous local mail servers.

Another significant feature includes increased delegated administration functions and added support for outbound IP Delivery Pools providing increased protection for an organisations IP reputation and consequently increasing spam catch rate.

"Our mission here at SpamTitan Technologies is to provide secure, reliable and affordable email security solutions to our customers," said Eddie Monaghan, Channel Manager. "We're taking a very customer-centric approach to developing SpamTitan continually implementing customer feedback and feature requests into new product releases, I think that will really shine through in our feature-rich SpamTitan 6.1. Although the company hasn't specified an official launch date yet, we expect SpamTitan 6.1 will be available to all new and existing users within the next couple of weeks."

New Research on the Risks posed by Social Media in your Business

Tampa, FL and Galway, Ireland – 4th Mar  2014.  What are some of the threats to your network security from social media and should you cut off your employee’s access to social media sites? How can SMB owners or IT guys protect the network security of the company? SpamTitan recently sponsored a survey by Osterman Research of 157 companies with an average of 1,470 employees as to perceptions about and experiences with malware.  Here we look at a couple of observationnewss drawn from that report related to social media.

Perception of Social Media Threats

The survey shows that 14% of malware infections over the period November 2012-November 2013 were via social media and other interactive and collaborative type sites (i.e. Web 2.0).  The graph below presents the results.  As we can see, web surfing and social media are closely related in terms of the risks associated.  Web surfing is the number one method by which companies are infected, social media platforms draw victims in.

How do companies perceive the risk-versus-benefit of social media?

More than half of the companies surveyed regard the leading social media sites to be legitimate business applications.  This should mean they should not cut off access, because people might need those sites for their work.

Among the companies that consider these sites useful some have nonetheless written guidelines or implemented technology to these block these sites include:

  • LinkedIn 21%
  • YouTube 36%
  • Facebook 40%
  • Twitter 45%
  • Skype 47%

As you can see, in the case of LinkedIn and Skype, some of these companies have cut off their access, yet they deem them useful.  This suggests that their security policies and business policies do not line up.  Contrast that with YouTube and Twitter where companies have not cut off when they should not.

Network Security issues with Social Media in the workplace.

The major security threat with social media is the same as with spam email:  people’s curiosity, their sense of trust, and a lack of adequate security training. People have a tendency to trust these sites, because they are so well-known, considered reputable and people are not always aware of the dangers there. Plus there is the presumption to trust someone you know or someone who knows someone you know, which is how spammers gain access to post links on your wall. In security circles, the underlying issue is called “transitive trust.” The average popular website links to all sorts of sites and services, with the typical home page featuring lots of third-party links. Each of those links could potentially be used by hackers for malicious intent. Your website or service is only as secure as its weakest link – literally!. Transitive-trust hacking is not new. It occurs every time a banner ad running on an innocent website ends up linking to a malicious malware laden website.

The concept was considered in Clara Shih’s book ‘The Facebook era’  although a heavily business focused book it is very readable and supported by credible research.

She writes: Consider this example of transitive trust: In trying to reach Graham, I discover that we both know Kelly. Because Kelly trusts me, and Graham trusts Kelly, Graham is more likely to “transitively” trust me if Kelly provides a warm introduction or I at least mention Kelly when reaching out to Graham. Not actually knowing me himself, Graham doesn’t trust me as much as he trusts Kelly, but … I don’t need him to trust me just yet. All I need is to get my foot in the door, and my product, service, or personality hopefully can do the rest. I just need a chance to be heard.

Transitive trust is not a new concept; in fact, it is how human beings have been making important decisions since the dawn of civilization. The challenge in the past was about discovery. I might have had to ask a lot of people before I found someone who knew Graham well enough to provide an introduction. Social networking sites bring transparency and efficiency to discovering mutual ties.

Facebook and LinkedIn encourage you to friend or make contacts with people who you do not know directly.  They do this if you give them access to your email contacts plus they match you up with people who have a common contact with you on their site.  This way hackers can gain access to post message on your wall.  Twitter does not have this problem, as you cannot post tweets directly on someone else´s wall.  However anyone can post tweets and direct them to hashtags (#), which is where your employees would find them as they read about different topics.

LinkedIn and Twitter shorten the URLs you post there.  As they do this, they say they check for malware. For example, when they block a site, LinkedIn says: “This link has been reported as participating in malicious behaviour or abuse. Facebook also says they scan for malware, but that did not prevent the Zeus virus from infecting users on their site last year.  This virus waits until you visit a bank website and then steals your user id and password.  If that person is your company financial controller or bookkeeper, that could be a big problem.

What about security issues relating to apps?

One of the inherent weaknesses with Facebook is that the apps that you install there can have access to post links on your wall.  So they can post seemingly harmless links to infected sites without the user knowing that. Your Facebook friends will then see that link.  Facebook has too many apps to scrutinize each carefully.

Finally, whatever defences you put in place, such as blocking sites completely or selectively blocking categories of sites – these are not going to work when people are using their own devices outside your network.  They can infect their tablet or smartphone and then send that out in company mail inadvertently with a web email client or when they attach via VPN and use their mobile device to send company.

Wrapping up, one can deploy technology and improve security training to help mitigate the risks of social media.   But it is probably not a good idea to cut off access to social media, as most business, news, and culture is or has moved online and people need to be able to gain access to that for work. Security is the most important focus area for business and IT decision makers in the context of their email and web solutions. Because of the significant potential for malware and other threats to impact organizations as they enter through corporate email systems, web applications, and social media tools – and the enormous potential for financial and other damage they can cause – decision makers must focus heavily on the specific solutions that will be employed, whether these solutions will be part of an integrated suite of solutions or implemented on a best-of-breed basis, and the models that will be used to deliver them.

Sophisticated Careto Virus Discovered – Attackers infect via Phishing.

Tampa, FL and Galway, Ireland – 19th Feb  2014. The weather is almost too warm in Sochi for the Olympics.  One needs adequate packed powder snow to ski, or at least to ski safely—instead, in Sochi, they have ice, plus clouds.  Clouds make it difficult to see where you are going: when the sky and the ground are the same colour, you cannot distinguish heaven from earth.  It is easy to get disoriented and suffer the sensation of not knowing whether you are skiing across the snow or floating above it.

But in Moscow, there is plenty of snow.  There at Kaspersky (which is one of the anti virus solutions included with SpamTitan anti spam), security researchers and antivirus software developers are hunkered down in the double-paned-windowed-warmth of a Moscow winter, working long hours to find, expose, and the contain computer viruses.

What they found this week was Careto.  This virus was lurking in the same place as a related virus found a few years ago. Kaspersky published a detailed forensic report to explain what they found. Some of this forensics you could have done yourself; other is much more complex.  For example, they use the Linux program “strings” to extract text from the executable file.  There they found comments and instructions that the programmer had written in Spanish, plus the name of the virus itself: Careto.

Servers used by attackers revealed 380+ victims from 31 countries.

Kaspersky says this Spanish word means “ugly face” or “mask”.  According to Kaspersky ‘What makes The Mask special is the complexity of the toolset used by the attackers. This includes an extremely sophisticated malware, a rootkit, a bootkit, Mac OS X and Linux versions and possibly versions for Android and iOS (iPad/iPhone)’. It’s believed that some foreign government paid to develop the virus, because it works on so many systems, suggesting a large team and much effort.  Data found by investigating and monitoring a set of command-and-control (C&C) servers used by the attackers revealed more than 380 unique victims from 31 countries. The main targets were government organisations including embassies, energy, oil and gas companies, research institutions, and activist’s and private equity firms.

Careto spreads using phishing. If you clicked on a mail containing their malicious link, you would have been sent to mock-up copies of El Pais, The Washington Post, El Especatdor, El Mundo, and Publico newpapers.  The actual link is hidden.  It says, for example: elpais.linkconf(dot)net.  Careto infected some computers by exploiting a weakness in the 2012 version of Adobe Flash (Flash is used to display video in certain web pages.). The other attack was made by hiding an executable program in an otherwise harmless .jpeg picture file.  The names are: dinner.jpg, waiter.jpg, and chef.jpg.

For victims a Catero malware infection spells disaster.

The virus intercepts all communication channels and collects information from the victim’s machine. Once installed, the virus steals encryption keys, records Skype calls, transcribes what you type, and listens in on data coming to and from your device. It then sends these stolen passwords, email addresses, and bank account numbers, and other secrets to a set of command and control servers, controlled by the hackers.  One of these was found running inside a SoftLayer data centre, a cloud-service provider.

Detection is difficult because of stealth rootkit capabilities, built-in functionalities and additional cyber-espionage modules. Having made their discovery, Kaspersky was able to follow the virus’s forensic clues to show what computers were affected and provide lots of details about where the virus came from.  Kaspersky Lab’s products detects and removes all known versions of The Mask/Careto malware so you are safe from Careto when using SpamTitan anti spam.

Requiring no on-premises software or end user client software, set up is extraordinarily simple and quick. After account setup and MX record redirection to SpamTitan Cloud servers, email is automatically cleaned of 99.98% of spam, before any optional configuration changes.

Hosted e-mail services hold several advantages over their in-house counterparts but there are drawbacks as well. Each organisation needs to examine their individual requirement and circumstances before deciding on the best option. At SpamTitan Technologies we offer a full range of email security solutions including an appliance for in-house deployment as well as the cloud based service – both offering the same core functionality.

Appliance versus services
One advantage of using a service like SpamTitan Cloud is that the volume of mail coming to your internal network is greatly reduced – by 80 to 90 percent in most cases. SpamTitan Clouds robust clustered network infrastructure significantly lowers the risk that your e-mail service will fail.

SpamTitan Cloud also offers a buffer for your e-mail system. If your internal e-mail server fails or your Internet connection goes down, your email will accumulate on SpamTitan Cloud until your in-house problem is resolved. SpamTitan Cloud offers all the enterprise level features you find in the SpamTitan appliance options, such as unbeatable spam blocking  of 99.98%+, double anti-virus protection, LDAP, Dynamic and aliases file recipient verification as well as SASL authentication and much more.

A fully featured free 14-day trial of of SpamTitan Cloud can be accessed from the SpamTitan website and used immediately to block spam, viruses and other email threats. Prices start at $450 for 50 users for 1 year, with no additional costs. Read more about SpamTitan Cloud.

New research finds that one in six organisations have fired an employee due to social media posts

Boston, MA and Galway, Ireland – SpamTitan Technologies, the makers of email and web security software have today announced the results of their survey on corporate social media usage. The results show that 87% of companies would consider firing an employee if they posted something confidential about the company on a social media site, while not surprisingly, only 16% of companies think it is ok to use social media for personal use at work.

These results mirror a recent study from Osterman Research which outlines real world corporate behaviour , the research found that one in six companies have dismissed an employee due to something they posted on various social media outlets. High profile examples of people who lost their jobs because of something they posted online include Pizza chain Domino employees who uploaded videos of them playing around with customers’ food on YouTube and a Bishop who was suspended for negative comments about the British royal wedding.

Social media use is on the rise, with 145 million active Twitter users globally and 345 million tweets a day, and Facebook has 845 million Facebook users worldwide. Social media use on corporate networks is also up significantly: Osterman Research found that 36% of corporate employees are using Facebook at work, up from 28% 12 months ago; Twitter use has gone from 11% to 17%; and LinkedIn from 22% to 29%.

“The benefits of social media for companies are far-reaching,” said Ronan Kavanagh, CEO SpamTitan. “However it is a dual edge sword.  To fully realise the benefit and to protect one’s business at the same time requires clear, audited and implemented HR and IT policies around the use of social media tools. Previous research shows that only 22% of organisations have a formal, detailed and thorough social media policy in place. In order to give employees the feelings of autonomy and ownership, they need to know the rules covering general HR issues as well as computer and Internet use.

We all hear stories  of employees wasting  time at work surfing the Web.  As online shopping continues to grow, guess when people do their shopping? According to the 2011 ISACA Shopping on the Job Survey , over 40% of US companys believe they lose over $10k in lost productivity as a result of employees shopping online during work hours.

For the reasons highlighted, an internet usage policy is now a serious requirement for businesses. Importantly, not all internet policies should be the same: each should be tailored to the organisation’s particular requirements so that clear, realistic and company appropriate guidelines are in place.

As well as the issue of time wasting on the internet, the risk of employees accessing infected sites of spreading malware, viruses and botnet infections across the network is widespread.  Cybercriminals wanting access to company network and data are not interested in the size of the company so all sizes are at risk however, being prepared is the best defence to tackle these problems.

76% of SMBs are under pressure to allow more access to Web 2.0 tools

Boston, MA and Galway, Ireland –  76% of SMBs (small and mid-size business) surveyed in a poll carried out by SpamTitan Technologies stated that they are under pressure to allow more access to Web 2.0.  Almost half, 44.4%, said that they do not have security in place to protect from Web 2.0 specific threats.  The business web filtering solutions provider encourages SMBs to deploy formal social media policies.

Forrester predicts the market for social enterprise apps will grow from $600 million in 2011 to $6.4 billion by 2016. The next decade is going to be a challenge to small business owners as they battle to make IT budgets stretch to deliver new tools without any downside.  Said Ronan Kavanagh, CEO, SpamTitan Technologies  “Social media in the enterprise represents a double-edge sword.  On the one hand, it opens up new business opportunities and powerful ways to engage with a company’s customer base.  However, on the other hand, it can expose business to new risks such as security threats and reduced network productivity.” He concluded. “With different research  studies showing that between 30-40% of SMB malware threats originate from social media sites, it is imperative that  small business owners take a close look at their IT and social media strategies, and establish policies now so that they harness the best of social media without downside – or downtime”

A recent study by analyst firm SMB Group showed that only about half of SMBs take a strategic and structured approach with social media. An unstructured approach means most SMBs will not have a social media or corporate internet usage police – leaving them vulnerable to potentially crippling business vulnerabilities.

SpamTitan suggests SMBs and their HR and IT teams consider the following to help create effective and secure social media strategies and policies.

  • Does your company have classified information – customer data, accounts, banking information etc – that if corrupted or stolen would ruin your business and could leave you liable legally?
  •  How long can you afford to shut your system down and what will the productivity and financial costs be  Unmanaged social media access increases vulnerability to phishing and malware attacks.
  • Which specific individuals and departments need access to these tools for business purposes?
  • Does your company have an IT and application user policy in place; and do you have the tools required to manage access? e.g. access to personal email or Facebook only permitted at lunch time or before/after work for some, and always for others e.g. marketing.

80% of companies believe permitting online gaming during work would cost them money.

Boston, MA and Galway, Ireland – 14th Dec 2011 – A recent poll carried out by email security and web filtering solutions provider, SpamTitan Technologies, has found that 80% of businesses surveyed (global sample) believe allowing workplace gaming costs money. Companies claim that distracted employees using social networking and online gaming during work hours are not carrying out their roles effectively and leave the company vulnerable to attack from malware and viruses which exceeds the potential benefits of a less stressed workforce .

Recent studies suggest allowing employees to play computer games outside of work hours, i.e. at lunch, or during break times is beneficial and encourages co-operation and social bonding. This research shows that employees feel more relaxed, confident, energetic, and productive, concluding that gaming should be allowed in the workplace. However for this to be efffective companies need to have an internet usage policy and security solutions  in place which will deal with the IT security and cost implications which includes:

– Greater demand on bandwidth usage
– Internet threats such as viruses, spyware and phishing
– Hacking incidents, and the consequent data and content security risks
– Time spent by IT managers dealing with these issues

The repercussions of IT security breaches are extensive, and the cost for individual companies can be potentially huge as Sony recently experienced. According to research from Rasmussen College’s School of Technology & Design, when Sony’s gaming services were hit, the collective hacking incidents and subsequent network outages cost the company an estimated $6 billion in costs and affected more than 100 million user accounts.  Sony  is a large company with substantial resources, smaller businesses are even more vulnerable when it comes to attacks.

“As the research suggests gaming at work can be productive if handled carefully with rules and usage regulations in place combined with software installations to protect the IT infrastructure,” said Ronan Kavanagh, SpamTitan Technologies CEO. “If companies allow their employees to have access to online computer games at work they need to be sure to use a web filtering tool, like WebTitan, to manage the time allocated for gaming, monitor the bandwidth demands and block dangerous sites.”

[1] Melbourne University study shows employees who could access social media from work were between 9% (Melbourne study) and 33% more productive than employees whose access was restricted.

SpamTitan poll reveals Companies IT security practices are leaving them vulnerable to spear phishing attacks.

Boston, MA and Galway, Ireland– A recent poll carried out by SpamTitan has discovered that 70% of companies that believe their organisation have been a victim of a spear phishing attack  are unsure that such attacks are reported to I.T. and dealt with appropriately. The lack of proactive measures to deal with the attacks can cost companies financially through the loss of data and system downtime. Spear phishing is a growing issue where a targeted false email that appears to be legitimate is sent to individuals or a company in order to access data.

The poll was distributed to SpamTitan customers who were asked if their company has ever experienced a spear phishing attack and if said attack had been reported to their IT department for treatment. Only 32% of those who responded believed their organisation had been exposed to a spear phishing attack but of those 70% were unsure whether the incident had been reported to their IT department to deal with.

These findings highlight the importance of a company security policy and the importance of communicating this policy effectively so that all employees know how to deal with the myriad of security issues they are regularly faced with. This includes what actions to take if they receive a suspicious and unsolicited email, what to do if they receive an email requesting information but the sender is not known to them, what internet activity can they reasonably pursue within company policy, if their role requires them to access a site that is blocked company wide how do they request access?

Most people are now aware of various prevalent banking phishing scams or similar, spear phishing is another advanced attempt at a breach of security that appears legitimate and should therefore be highlighted even more as it is a much more sophisticated form of phishing,” said Ronan Kavanagh, CEO, SpamTitan.com. ‘Educating employees around a range of security issues is an important step that many companies ignore. Yes, robust, powerful and updated security solutions are crucial but this doesn’t mean that companies can afford to ignore the ‘softer’ behavioural issues associated with security.  It only takes one employee to open the wrong email to give access to senstitive company data bring a whole company’s IT systems to a halt.”

About spear phishing

Spear phishing is the act of creating and sending a falsely created email to one person or several people at a particular company. The email usually appears to come from a person of authority – or  someone who works at the same company.

Businesses lose an average of $65,000 per year to workers using social media reveals SpamTitans Social Media calculator

Boston, MA and Galway, Ireland – A calculator which measures the cost to companies of time spent by employees using social media has revealed that the average company with 52 employees pays out  $65000 per year for non-work related social media activity. WebTitan’s social media cost calculator shows that workers using non-work related social networking for a mere 20 minutes is the equivalent of paying out $65,000 or 5% of the year’s salary bill for non-productive work.

Social media is growing exponentially so the issue of people accessing and using it during work hours is likely to increase and continue to cost companies in terms of productivity and ultimately financially. Twitter has grown from 27 million Tweets per day in 2010 to 95 million – a 250% increase. Facebook has grown globally from 350 million active users, to 640 million – half of which login daily. Other social media products such as Flickr, Wikipedia , YouTube and the new Google+ combined with access from mobile devices establishes how pervasive social media is.

Finding a way to manage non-work browsing habits, including accessing Facebook at work, Tweeting, watching YouTube videos or any of the numerous other social media activities that can distract employees in their daily working lives, is proving challenging for companies. As social media calculator shows, there is a significant cost involved and companies should think about how to stop this getting out of control.

“With companies now using social media to market to customers it is important that social media access is flexibly managed as roles require it, and that the web filtering tool employed to do this is dynamic enough to keep pace with changes within the organization’ said Ronan Kavanagh, SpamTitan Technologies CEO. ‘In the past companies just had to consider personal use of telephone and subsequently email, now they have a minefield of Internet related access points to consider.”

If you want to see how your company is being affected by non work related social networking try WebTitan’s calculator here – Social Media Cost Calculator.  For further information on WebTitan visit the website www.webtitan.com or email info@webtitan.com

SpamTitan Technologies, now TitanHQ, launches Social Media Cost Calculator

Boston, MA and Galway, Ireland – March 1st 2011 – SpamTitan Technologies, the makers of the powerful yet easy-to-manage web filtering solution WebTitan, today presented its Social Media Cost Calculator.  The new tool becomes available as SpamTitan releases the results of its latest customer research which shows that 76 per cent of customers feel under pressure to allow access to more Web 2.0 tools in the workplace.

The WebTitan social media cost calculator is a tool to help Human Resource (HR) professionals better understand the cost implications of social networking in the office, allowing them to approximate an annual cost of this activity to the business based on average salary. The Social Media Cost Calculator can be used by HR or IT to assist in creating a business case for expenditure on productivity measures such as web filtering tools, based on potential savings.

The true cost of social networking in the office is of real concern to businesses. A 2010 survey of 1000 employees by MyJobGroup found that among those who use sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Myspace at work, one-third are spending more than 30 minutes a day and almost 6 per cent spend more than an hour. Such potential for lost productivity has major cost implications, especially for small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).  A simple, straight forward way to calculate the cost could make all the difference to employers’ efforts at staying in control.
“The need for businesses to ensure social networking activity in the workplace is responsible and productive is fast becoming a major HR issue,” said SpamTitan Technologies’ CEO Ronan Kavanagh.  “Our Social Media Cost Calculator is one way for IT to give visibility and in turn help HR exercise more control over the proper use of Web 2.0 so that these tools can safely play their part in bringing benefits to the business.
Social media has become part of everyday life with nearly a billion people worldwide using some type of social networking site. According to the WebTitan Social Media Cost Calculator, if every employee spent just 20 minutes a day on non-work related social media activity it would cost a company with 100 employees on an average salary of $25k more than $50,000 a year.  With this visibility comes a greater understanding which can be immensely helpful in allowing HR, management and I.T. to control how social media is used in the workplace.
‘Having clear visibility of internet usage across the organisation has been an invaluable aid to determining our internet usage policy,” said Tony Dervan, HR Manager, EssentialSkillz.  “Some of our employees need access to social networking as part of their job but many do not. Using the social media cost calculator has allowed us to manage internet productivity much more accurately.”
It is important that you choose the web filtering solution that is right for your organisation’s needs,” said Ronan Kavanagh. “By working with IT, HR can help guide the company to safe internet use that is controlled but not blanket banned and where the organisation can safely embrace and reap the benefits of business Web 2.0 tools.”

SpamTitan Technologies, the makers of powerful yet easy-to-manage spam and web filtering software, today announced a major new release of WebTitan, its powerful web filtering solution for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Release 3.50 includes a range of enhancements including advanced reporting capabilities and increased management flexibility allowing for data to be shared quickly between IT and the HR department as well as other management functions so that issues can be dealt with as required. This increased reporting capability along with the various installation process improvements make installing, setting up and using WebTitan easier than ever. Windows IT Pro recommends SpamTitan

Leading on-line technology website Windows IT Pro  today announced the results of their recent SpamTitan review. The reviewer Nathan Winters found that SpamTitan was ‘ quick and easy to set up and works well with limited configuration. It has good granularity of policies and a simple UI for both administrators and end users.’.

Some of the key features of SpamTitan highlighted by the review included the granular nature by which policies can be applied. He noted that you can configure different spam- and virus-filtering settings for different email domains and systems. You can also configure outbound disclaimers for each domain and customize the notifications received when an email message breaks a policy.

The reviewer was particularly impressed with the overall spam and virus blocking abilities of SpamTitan estimating that since implementing SpamTitan less than 1 percent of mail received was spam, no false positives were reported and all viruses received were correctly filtered.

“SpamTitan anti-spam software continues to successfully help thousands of companies worldwide to rid users’ inboxes of spam, viruses and other email threats’ said Ronan KavanaghCEO of SpamTitan Technologies.  We are delighted to be recognized by Windows IT pro, this review demonstrates our ability to consistently and effectively address today’s top security challenges for a more secure enterprise.

IT Managers say spam remains the greatest source of phishing threats in the workplace

SpamTitan Technologies, the makers of powerful yet easy-to-manage spam and web filtering software, today announced the findings of its latest survey of SMBs on the continued danger of phishing attacks.  The research shows that despite media reports about the rise in phishing on social networking sites its perceived threat to businesses is marginal in comparison with traditional spam techniques.

An overwhelming majority (75 percent) of IT managers surveyed regard traditional spam as the top security threat. Opinion is divided over whether business network security measures have caused phishing attacks to migrate from email to social networking sites like Twitter or Facebook with 37 percent saying it is a growing phenomenon while 31 percent disagree.  Instead they regard the move to on-line phishing as a natural response the growth in the user communities of the main social networking sites.

Clear policies along with improvements in user education and awareness topped recommendations as the best way to beat phishing in all its forms.

“Phishing attacks remain a clear and present threat to businesses,” said  Ronan Kavanagh, CEO of SpamTitan Technologies.  “There is no evidence to suggest that network security measures are discouraging the number of phishing attacks it is simply that the arrival of social networking in the workplace has presented phishers with a bigger pond to phish in.”

SpamTitan’s survey findings about the phishing threat posed by social networking sites are consistent with another Internet security report from earlier this year. According to antivirus software vendor Kaspersky Labs Facebook’s share of phishing attacks in the first three months of 2010 was just 5.7 percent. This earned it fourth place on the list of most-targeted Web sites a long way behind the leaders HSBC, eBay and PayPal which alone accounts for more than 52 percent of all scams.

To safeguard customers from phishing attacks, the latest SpamTitan release uses a multi-layered approach. It includes new malware detection mechanisms and other significant improvements to the scan engine including a large set of Phishing signatures, support for SURBLs (Spam URL Realtime Blocklists) and heuristic rule tests. The new phishing module allows SpamTitan to deliver better and more generic detection of phishing emails by searching for URLs in email messages and can also detect day-zero phishing emails.

SpamTitan announces support for 64-bit computing.

Galway , August 24th – SpamTitan Technologies now support running SpamTitan software on  64-bit machines. This introduction is as a result of growing requests from customers who have been seeing new servers coming to market with 64-bit processors as standard  as well as virtualisation software providers like VMware supporting 64-bit across their platforms.

Running SpamTitan on a  64bit processor allows for higher performance than is achievable with 32-bit processors, it also allows users to increase the memory above the 3.5GB limit set by 32-bit processors. The SpamTitan 64bit platform is ideally suited to ISPs who wish to extend their offerings e.g. to filter outbound mails to guard against customer’s being blacklisted due to spam attacks. The SpamTitan 64 bit platform can be easily clustered with the 32bit platform allowing so it can be rolled out as customers acquire 64bit hardware or 64bit virtual infrastructure without any disruption to their current installation.

SpamTitan has been designed from the ground up to meet the complex scaleability and management needs of ISPs and other managed email service providers. More and more this means operating in a virtualized environment as ISPs seek to optimize their server usage. “SpamTitan is one of the first vendors  to provide 64-bit support for virtual computing allowing ISPs the opportunity to extend their offerings.  There are few virtualized security solutions to offer such an extensive set of tools that are specifically tailored to the needs of ISPs,” said Kavanagh.

The flexibility offered by these tools along with the product’s reliability, capacity and tracking abilities is invaluable to dynamic environments such as ISPs where customers subscribe and unsubscribe on a continuous basis. Current users of SpamTitan can download a new installation from https://www.spamtitan.com/download, once SpamTitan has been set-up successfully 64-bit support is available. Support for 64-bit computing will be extended to the WebTitan solution very shortly.

SpamTitan report that the line between personal and company data are becoming more blurred

Boston, Galway  15th June, 2010 : Failure by SMBs to adopt formal corporate social media policies, as highlighted by a survey by SpamTitan, could be storing up legal trouble for themselves in the not too distant future.

An audit of 200 SMBs worldwide revealed that while almost all allowed Internet access and some social networking applications in the workplace almost half (49 per cent) admitted they had not taken even basic steps towards a social media policy such as deploying a Web filter.

Many SMBs are now truly embracing social networking applications by adopted them within their overall marketing strategies. But it is almost impossible to track who owns this data as social data content is aggregated from site to site.

“As business embraces social networking as a way to propagate messages and build their brands the line dividing personal and company data is becoming increasingly blurred,” said Alastair Purdy, partner at Purdy FitzGerald Solicitors. “The important thing is to take steps to protect yourself or your company as much as possible in advance. Failure to do so will potentially leave the SMB sector with significant legal issues over data ownership.”

The legal position is at a very early stage of development. This is illustrated in a recent case involving the UK arm of a US business to business media publishing group (PennWell Publishing v Ornstein (2007 EWHC) ruled that the employer owned the outlook contacts of a former journalist employee even though this list contained both work and personal contacts some of which had been brought to the company by the employee.

This blurring between work and personal becomes even more problematic in the social networking sphere.  In another recent UK case a recruitment consultant moved confidential contact information to his LinkedIn account whilst employed at Hays Recruitment. This decision was one of the first to highlight the tension between businesses encouraging employees to use social networking websites for work but then claiming that the contacts and content remain confidential information at the end of their employment.

“We are in a new era and it is time for every company to include a corporate social media policy alongside internet usage guidelines as part of their employment terms,” said Ronan Kavanagh CEO SpamTitan Technologies ‘Without a clear internet policy many employees are unaware of the implications of sharing information on sites like Linkedin and if appropriate protection is absent many employers risk being drawn into costly legal wrangles with employees as time goes on.”

“Companies need to get to a point where they are managing employee behaviour at the individual level,” continued Kavanagh.  “Our WebTitan Internet filtering software for example is helping customers manage Internet usage in granular detail, thereby improving network security and reducing bandwidth demands in an easy-to-use, flexible and affordable way.”

WebTitan allows users to create and apply different policies to a limitless number of different workgroups.  It is possible to create flexible policies and permissions for different individuals, groups or departments within an organisation. WebTitan has a dynamic database that is updated daily with new blacklisted sites. The categorization database along with the anti-malware protection automatically update in the background at periodic intervals set by the administrator. Featuring extensive and customizable keyword filtering and comprehensive reporting, WebTitan has minimal impact on resources so as to help companies meet the challenge of staying secure in the fast changing world of social networking as cost effectively as possible.

SpamTitan, now TitanHQ, Reports Record Growth in ISP Customer-base in 2009

Boston, MA and Galway, Ireland – 16th February 2010 – Virtualized security software appliances are playing a vital role in helping Internet Service Providers (ISPs) combat ever increasing levels of spam according to SpamTitan Technologies, the makers of powerful yet easy-to-manage spam and web filtering software.  SpamTitan’s sales for the financial year ended 31 December 2009 showed a clear trend among ISPs for Cloud-, VMware- and ISO image-based anti-spam appliances.

Levels of spam account for 19 out of every 20 e-mails sent according to the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) in its third annual spam report just published. The report urges ISPs to make a more “dedicated effort” to get spam under control.  ENISA says that a third of the largest service providers spend millions of Euros every year on anti-spam measures while one in four small ISPs has an annual spam-fighting budget in excess of €10,000 / $13700.

“As levels of spam accelerate ISPs are under pressure to apply increasingly costly resources to stopping malicious mail reaching customer inboxes,” says Ronan Kavanagh SpamTitan CEO.  “But ISPs have to balance this against the need to manage costs and win new business.  SpamTitan is proving increasingly popular with ISPs for its ability to help them derive increased efficiencies by moving to a virtualized, Cloud-based model and as well as for its accurate filtering and very low false positive rates.”

In 2009 the ISP sector accounted for 30 per cent of SpamTitan’s customer base and this is expected to rise to 45 per cent in 2010. SpamTitan’s ISP customer profile ranges from the small local providers to the very large industry providers supporting tens of thousands of users. ISP customers moving to SpamTitan recently include HBC Networks and PageOne Communications.

SpamTitan’s pricing actually came as quite a shock to us – it had more features than many of the other products we looked at, but cost substantially less,” explained Jim Brown, Network Analyst with HBC Networks. “Since we installed SpamTitan, it has blocked over 4.5 million junk emails that would otherwise have placed a serious drain on our customer’s mail servers.”

“For me, the real winner with SpamTitan is its unlimited user licensing model at a realistic price,” commented Gavin Lowle, Principal Information Technology Engineer, of PageOne.  “Other advantages are its compatibility with VMware and how easy it is to deploy.  We had SpamTitan up and running in minutes. It also has an extremely small footprint and uses minimal resource overhead. The multiple instance and clustering options in SpamTitan for VMware, in conjunction with VMware Vmotion, Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) and High Availability (HA), ensure our e-mail infrastructure remains highly resilient at all times.”

SpamTitan has been designed from the ground up to meet the complex scaleability and management needs of ISPs and other managed email service providers. .More and more this means operating in a virtualized environment as ISPs seek to optimize their server usage. “SpamTitan is one of the few virtualized security solutions to offer an extensive set of tools that are specifically tailored to the needs of ISPs,” said Kavanagh. “Features such as cluster management help increase total system capacity, provide enhanced monitoring and automatic failover capabilities. ISPs also have the ability to add domains directly into the SpamTitan API to automate the process of adding new clients to an ISP’s mail-filtering service. This flexibility along with the product’s reliability, capacity and tracking abilities is invaluable to dynamic environments such as ISPs where customers subscribe and unsubscribe on a continuous basis.

ISPs have to ensure customers do not experience delays when trying to use their server. This can happen if bandwidth is being swamped by useless and potentially harmful spam. SpamTitan takes care of all this for ISPs freeing them toconcentrate on other areas of the business. The January 2010 Virus Bulletin test cemented this fact voting SpamTitan No 1 in blocking the most spam ahead of many of the best known industry brands.  According to Kavanagh, ”SpamTitan provides ISPs with all the bells and whistles at a fraction of the cost. We see a large number of our new ISP customers moving from existing big brand names. ISPs  are under a great deal of budgetary and service level pressure and we are delighted that more and more are turning to SpamTitan as their best option.”

SpamTitan ranked industry No.1 at blocking spam in Virus Bulletin’s January 2010 test

Boston, MA and Galway, Ireland – 11 January 2010: SpamTitan Technologies, the makers of powerful yet easy-to-manage spam and web filtering software, today announced that it has again outperformed the leading industry brands in the latest Virus Bulletin Spam awards. In comparative tests featuring 15 of its nearest rivals, SpamTitan combined the highest spam catch rate with a very low false positive ratio.  This result earned SpamTitan the much coveted Virus Bulletin Award along with strong independent endorsement for its highly effective and easy to use spam filtering solution.

Virus Bulletin regularly conducts rigorous testing of anti-virus and anti-malware products to ensure the worldwide IT security industry stays equipped to protect users from the latest Internet threats.  SpamTitan, which runs as a virtual machine under VMware, was taking part in the Virus Bulletin test for only the second time.  In November 2009 SpamTitan picked up an award for the highest spam catch rate at the first attempt.  In January’s test SpamTitan again outperformed some of the industry’s best known brands including McAfee, MailMarshal, BitDefender, Fortinet and Symantec.

“In recent years, e-mail spam has grown from a mere nuisance into a multi-million dollar business for criminals and the business consequences of not blocking spam effectively can be very damaging,” said Ronan Kavanagh CEO. “Unlike many of our rivals, SpamTitan does not require customers to choose between preventing large volumes of spam on the one hand or prescribing a low rate of false positives on the other – with SpamTitan they get both.

“We are seeing a growing number of new customers moving away from other solutions,” he added.  “These independent test results prove that our hard work to ensure our customers receive the best possible protection from spam and viruses at an extremely competitive price is paying off.”

Two new categories of spam were added to the January test: those of ‘image spam’ and ‘large spam’. The former consisted of spam emails that contained at least one embedded image while the latter consisted of spam emails comprising a body size of at least 50,000 bytes. Both types of emails are notoriously difficult to filter, especially using traditional content scanning methods.

Martijn Grooten, author of the Virus Bulletin Anti-spam comparitive review stated that:  ‘the detailed results show that neither large spam nor spam containing images are a problem for (SpamTitan) and, as there were few false positives it earns a Virus Bulletin Spam award with the second highest final score’.

New features in the area of content filtering were also announced today, allowing user to import content filtering key words and a new search option for content filtering keywords.  In addition, WebTitan 3.03 includes new category editing and notification features.  These features allow for speedier category updating including increased flexibility in the area of administrator and user notifications. SpamTitan wins Gold in Virus Bulletin Anti-spam awards

SpamTitan has achieved a Gold award on its first time to participate in the Virus Bulletin Anti-Spam Test. The Virus Bulletin is an independent global publication specific to the field of viruses and related malware. SpamTitan is the first anti-spam solution that runs on a virtual machine to take part in the Virus Bulletin test – demonstrating that SpamTitan is both an innovative and high quality product.

Virus Bulletin’s Anti-spam Test Director Martijn Grooten said in relation to SpamTitan  “I was particularly charmed by the simple, yet accurate explanations of the various anti-spam rules.  The fact that this approach worked well to block spam can be seen from the spam catch rate – which was among the highest in this test.  At the same time, the product had a very low false positive rate, missing out on a platinum award by just a single email; a VBSpam Gold award is more than deserved.”

There was an increase in the number of products tested this month, and the benchmarks used for this test were stricter than in previous tests. To be the first virtual anti-spam solution tested in the Virus Bulletin anti-spam test and to come away with a gold award and a glowing recommendation is a testament to the quality of the SpamTitan anti-spam solution.

The product uses a cloud-based database and real-time classification system to provide an unmatched combination of accurate and scalable coverage.
